Hip-Hop-Ademics History and a Freebie From the Other Half of The Teaching Twosome!

Hello friends! I know it's been a while since my last post, but I promise you AND my wife that I will try to post more often.  Let’s talk about Hip-Hop-Ademics a bit.

Hip-Hop-Ademics is an educational tool instructed through hip-hop music that literally WRAPS kids into learning.  Here’s how it all began.  The year: 2000. The place: an inner-city school district. The grade: kindergarten. It was my first year of teaching, and I was full of energy, excitement, and enthusiasm, but there were times when I was bored out of my mind. One of those times was circle time. I had my entire class on the carpet and we were singing the alphabet song, and I was going crazy with boredom. The traditional tune was driving me crazy so I made an executive decision to change it up a bit. I popped a cd in the stereo, the beat dropped, and I began to rap the ABC's. Instantly, everyone in the room was on their feet rapping and dancing along with me. So we began to rap letter sounds, nursery rhymes, numbers, sight words, colors, and shapes. Hip-Hop-Ademics was born. My class was having a blast, and more importantly they were learning!

There are currently eight CDs.  Click on the Hip-Hop-Ademics tab above to see what’s available.

Now for your chance for a freebie. The first ten people that comment about why you think music is important in the classroom will receive a free download of “The ABC Rap Remix” which is not available anywhere else. Don’t forget to leave your email address with your comment.  You don’t want to miss out on this.  So hurry!

  1. Music feeds the soul. I love playing music anytime. It sets the mood for the lesson. It is great for transitions. I have used music for activators for my lesson plans. I expose the children to all types of music. I have always stayed current since I have 2 teenage girls who listen to anything 70's to Rap. great discussion started especially with Middle School students.
If I am one of your 10 this will be great since I am heading back to 1st and 2nd grade.

    Thank you.

  2. Music helps meet all modalities as children learn. As you said in your post, it breaks up the boredom and gets the kids engaged in learning. I use music a lot in my first grade class.

  5. I love using music in the classroom and should definitely do it more often! It makes learning so much fun! All kids love to get up and move. It engages so many different learning styles! This last year my school did a musical and my kids were singing the songs CONSTANTLY. It definitely makes things easier to remember when it's put to a beat. I'm so excited to use the ABC rap w my Kindergarteners this year....thanks!
